Help, I Hate My Job!

Hello, magical human,

Work is such a big part of our lives.

Pretty soon after meeting someone, you tell them what you do for a living.

We spend the majority of our time at work and it gives us a form of identity.

So if you dislike Monday mornings, looking at your bosses face, everyday feels like its ground hog day and your brain is rotting or you yearn for something more meaning and purposeful, know this my fellow unicorn.

You are not alone.

Help, I Hate My Job! What Do I Do?

Many people end up stuck in jobs they hate.

Especially when you are comfortable in the knowledge that your bills are paid every month and you have enough left over for holidays, dinner with friends, girls day with mum or it fulfils your Zara clothes and shoe obsession.

It happens.

The truth is, when you are really unhappy in your job, it creates a host of other issues.

You start to feel stuck, unchallenged, demotivated and even stressed, which is a real risk to your mental health and your professional and personal relationships.

You don’t deserve that.

You don’t have to settle in your career.

You have to know that it’s okay to leave a job you hate, and there are many opportunities available to you, even now.

So, no matter the reason:

👉 I hate my job with a passion;

👉 I feel like it is no longer challenging me and I feel like I’ve reached my peak; or

👉 I’m ready to try something new.

If you are reading this, you are ready to do something about it, right now!

How do I figure all of this out?

1. What do you hate about your job?

When I’m working with my clients it’s important to get specific about what they don’t like.

I know it sounds pretty obvious but, what do you actually hate about your job?

Do you dislike your job right now or are you feeling burnt out?

Have you recently started and it turns out, it’s not what you expected?

Is the job itself okay, but your boss or co-workers are awful?

If you are in a toxic work space but doing something you love, you can still hate going to work every day.

Perhaps the company doesn’t align with your values or development needs?

Do you see how this process can start to unravel the REAL reason you are not happy in your job?

Do you like the company and the people, but don’t feel like the department is a good fit?

You may even have already tried moving to a different department and you still don’t feel right?

Or you’ve moved to a different company, doing the same thing, but you still end up feeling unhappy?

Then the inevitable enters the room, oh yes, your loyal and faithful “friend”, Little Miss Nut Nut (your inner critic) and you start to think there is something wrong with you!

I really don’t want this to be you.

I’ve been there, so I want you to isolate what you dislike about your job.

Until you know, without a shadow of a doubt, what you don’t like about it, it will be impossible to get you into role or career that makes you happy and satisfied.

Please take a moment and make a list, do it now!

2. What Do You Want?

Really take some time to visualise of everything you need to be in love with your career and make you wake up every day feeling like.

“I can’t believe I get to do this, my career is amazing!” (and YES, this is how you SHOULD feel when you show up at work).

How do you feel when you wake up? How do you feel when you show up for work? What does your day-to-day look like?

What does you career look like when you feel happy, excited, challenged and proud?

What would you be motivated to do every day?

What are you passionate about?

If the company was the issue, what values does the next company have to have?

If you want to transition out of you job, what career or business aligns with your current strengths and skills?

What skills or qualifications do you need to gain to get those skills?

Don’t be scared or think it’s too late in life to completely start a fresh.

Whether swapping from press and publicity to the marketing department, music over to the broadcasting industry.

Or even following your passion and purpose to start your own business doing something you’ve always dreamed of.

It may seem super scary but, if I can do it the latter at 37 years old, so can you!

Again, please take some time to make a list of everything that you want, and how you want to feel in your job, career or new business.

3. Commit to Making the Next Step

Depending on the issue, start to formulate your plan.

Do you need to start hitting up LinkedIn for a job search or do you need to speak to Brenda in HR about others roles in the company?

Is it time to dust off your best “interview” outfit and get in touch with recruitment agencies to enhance your chance of securing a role you love!

How long will it take you take gain any qualifications or skills you need to transition into a new career or build your business?

Structure that into your timeline.

4. Stay Positive

We are all guilty of complaining about feeling stuck at work.

But if you stay stuck on miserable, that breeds miserable human being everywhere else.

It’s okay to have bad days.

Visit it, but don’t live there.

It’s important to vent your frustrations so don’t keep your feelings bottled up inside.

Please, please, please don’t be afraid to share them with your friends, family or coach, they will be happy to support you.

Be realistic and good to yourself, and don’t expect things to happen overnight.

This also means looking after yourself, get enough sleep (instead of staying up late stressing).

Finding a good job is a process, but with patience, effort and a plan, the universe will give you exactly what is right for you.

Remember, you deserve to show up in a career that you love and you deserve to thrive.

Now you have all the tools to get you into a career you are excited to get out of bed for.

How will you use this roadmap to find the career you love?

Over to you!
