Hello, magical being,
I hope you’re ready to fill your Career Tool Kit with a 5 Step Career Transition Strategy
to show you…
How to Switch your Role or Industry Successfully!
I’m really motivated by this topic, because after a voting poll on my socials.
The majority of you fearless beings made it clear you either want to switch jobs or transition into a completely different industry.
I’ve been there too.
I’ve worked in finance, law, music, film & TV, broadcasting, security, property and health care, to name a few.
*Oh my goodness, I sound like an industry whore!
I have experienced and learned that no matter where you are.
No matter what changes you make to your environment.
If it doesn’t set your soul on fire and make you smile, inside and out.
You will always feel the same unease, longing and frustration inside.
I don’t want you to feel this way and I really don’t want you to make any risky, knee jerk reactions without a plan or strategy in place.
If you are ready to make that leap now.
By following this 5 step strategy you will have all you need to successfully transition and finally wake up feeling like a soul leader at work!
1. Know What They Want!
You can’t just leap into a different job or industry.
If it was that simple, everyone would do it!
Get this one right by doing your research into the company and/or industry.
Because this sets the foundation of how you start your journey.
Top Questions to Ask Yourself:
What does this job or industry require?
What are the duties, tasks, knowledge, skills?
What are their non-negotiable entry requirements?
2. Create Your Path
Once you’ve done your research.
Now is the time to start creating the steps that build the path to your success!
Top Questions to Ask Yourself:
What skills are they asking for, that I don’t have, but CAN get?
(This could be a short online course or certification.)
What skills do they require, that I don’t have, and CAN’T get?
(This is where you may need to get honest, realistic or pivot.)
It might sound daunting at first, but at least now you know exactly what you need to do to and you can see how much time you need to factor into your plan.
3. Create your Brag Bank!
A lot of what we covered in step 1 and 2 was all about the company, what they need and what you need to gain to get your foot in the door.
Step 3 is all about you and your awesomeness baby!
This is where I want you to write down ALL of your transferable skills and experience from your career AND life.
Think of every time you volunteered to take on a new project at work.
Or the report you researched, beautifully curated in Canva and presented to your team.
Maybe the time you organised the girls annual holiday like a travel agent savant.
Or the time your sisters friend asked you for some advice on a delicate matter.
Top questions to ask yourself:
What skills or knowledge do I ALREADY have that align with what they want?
Have I done anything that is similar to what this job is asking for?
What life experiences have I had that are transferable to this role?
What have other people asked me to help them with?
What would my best friend say I am brilliant at?
I get my clients to complete their Brag Bank and it blows their minds!
It’s very easy to think that because you don’t have any experience in a particular role or industry and that it’s impossible to make a change.
But that simply isn’t true.
Please don’t quit before you begin.
You my fellow unicorn have tons of skills, work and life experiences that can be applied to the right role if you are looking at the right opportunities.
4. Get Ready to Seek New Opportunities
Trying to switch careers takes time.
It’s not the same as moving to a different company, doing the same thing.
You want to be strategic about applying for roles.
We’ve all erratically scrolled through LinkedIn applying for jobs with the mindset…
“I don’t give a shit what I do, as long as it pays all my household bills, just get me the heck out of here”
We don’t want that!
Thinking strategically could also mean thinking laterally.
If you do need to gain additional qualifications and experience, it might be a good idea to pivot.
Research what other positions you could step into next, that bridges the gap between where you are now and your dream career.
Be ready with your Brag Bank so when the right opportunity arises, you have all of your transferable skills and experience in one place.
Plus it will make the next step much much easier!
5. Align your CV for EVERY Position!
I know, I know, I know!
It feels like a looooong and tedious process.
But, don’t you feel better now that I made you go through Step 3?
And if you didn’t, go back and complete your Brag Bank, missy!
Understanding that if want to change career, role or industry.
You have to do the work.
It’s VERY important when applying for a new role that you align your CV using the right language, skills and experience they project in their job description.
Because it enhances your chances of being called for an interview!
Will you implement this strategy to help you transition out of your role or industry?
